What do you need to play Sword World 2.5?
The short list of what you actually need to start Sword World 2.5: dice, rules, a character and a group. No expensive kit required.
Sword World 2.5 has a reputation for being approachable, and the barrier to entry is genuinely low. You do not need a shelf of books or a pile of miniatures to run your first session. Here is the honest checklist.
The essentials
- A group. One Game Master (GM) and two to five players. Three players is a comfortable minimum for covering the main roles.
- Dice. The whole system runs on six-sided dice (d6). Every core roll is 2d6, so a couple of d6 per person is plenty. A physical set is nice, but any dice-roller app works.
- The rules. Sword World 2.5 is published by Group SNE. You need access to the rulebook content to play at a real table. The Hub systematizes the mechanics with provenance, but it does not replace the official books — if the game hooks you, support the official products.
- A character. Each player brings an adventurer built from a mix of disciplines. Our character creation guide walks you through it, and the planner does the math for you.
- Something to track it on. A character sheet (paper or digital) and a place to note HP, MP and gear.
That is the real list. Everything else is optional comfort.
Nice to have, not required
- A battle map and tokens. Combat uses a simple front/back arrangement rather than exact grid distances, so you can run fights with a rough sketch or purely in the theater of the mind. Miniatures are welcome but never mandatory.
- Pre-made characters. New to the system? Starting from a ready-built adventurer removes the setup hurdle. Browse the gallery for community builds you can adopt and tweak.
- Reference tools. The class explorer and recommender mean you do not have to memorize 30 disciplines before your first game.
What about a Game Master?
One person runs the world, plays the non-player characters and adjudicates rolls. If nobody has done it before, that is fine — Sword World's 2d6 core and published scenarios are gentle on first-time GMs. Whoever volunteers should skim the dice and checks and combat explained guides first.
A realistic starter setup
For a first session you can get away with: a handful of d6, one shared copy of the rules, printed or digital sheets, and three adventurers built in the planner. Pick a short published scenario, set aside an afternoon, and you are playing. Total cost beyond the rulebook: basically nothing.
FAQ
Do I need special dice for Sword World 2.5?
No. It only uses ordinary six-sided dice, the same kind found in most board games. There are no d20s, d8s or other polyhedrals in the core system.
Do I have to buy the books to try it?
To play a full table you need access to the official Group SNE rules. To learn the system and prototype characters first, the Hub's free tools let you explore disciplines and builds without buying anything.
Do I need miniatures and a battle map?
No. Combat uses a simple front-and-back positioning rather than precise grid movement, so it runs fine in the theater of the mind. Minis are a nice extra, not a requirement.
How much does it cost to start?
Beyond the rulebook, close to nothing. A few six-sided dice you probably already own, some paper for sheets, and a free evening are enough for a first session.
